Why You'll Love This Safari
The Mountains of Kaokoland

Kaokoland is defined by its mountains. Jagged peaks rise from the dry river valleys, with gravel plains and dunes stretching between them. The Hoanib cuts through this landscape, creating pockets of vegetation and water that draw wildlife into an otherwise arid wilderness.
The Desert Elephants

Desert-adapted elephants move through the Hoanib Valley in search of food and water, following ancient routes through the riverbeds. Seeing them here is not about finding a herd gathered around a permanent waterhole. It is about following their movements through the landscape they have learned to survive in.
Giraffe in the Desert

Desert-adapted giraffe are one of the defining wildlife encounters of the Hoanib Valley. Their ability to survive among the dry riverbeds and sparse vegetation is part of what makes this ecosystem so fascinating, and Hoanib Valley Camp has a particular connection to giraffe research and conservation.
Tracking Black Rhino

The Hoanib Valley is home to free-ranging black rhino and stays of three nights or more can include the opportunity to track them on foot through the sandy riverbeds with experienced guides.
Wildlife Has Learned to Adapt

There are no endless plains filled with game here. Instead, wildlife is scattered across a vast landscape and has evolved to make the most of what little the desert provides. Elephant, giraffe, rhino, oryx, springbok, kudu, zebra and klipspringer all move through the valleys and mountains, while lion remain an elusive possibility.
A Wilderness Far From the Ordinary

Kaokoland feels remote in every sense. Tourism remains limited, the landscapes are immense and the experience is shaped as much by the silence and scale of the desert as by the wildlife you find within it.
Lodges In Our Portfolio
The Desert Mountains of Kaokoland is built around Hoanib Valley Camp, an intimate six-room camp tucked into a hidden valley overlooking the ephemeral Hoanib River. Created in partnership with the local community and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, it offers a simple, understated base that feels closely connected to the surrounding desert.

Hoanib Valley Camp
Hidden in a sheltered valley overlooking the ephemeral Hoanib River, Hoanib Valley Camp places you deep within the stark beauty of Kaokoland. Just six canvas tents sit beneath the surrounding mountains, with the desert stretching in every direction. Days are spent tracking desert-adapted elephant, giraffe and black rhino across dry riverbeds and rugged valleys, walking through the landscape or learning about the people and conservation projects that have shaped this remote wilderness. It is an intimate camp for experiencing one of Namibia’s most extraordinary ecosystems at its own pace.

The All Out Safaris Perspective
Kaokoland changes the way you think about safari.
There is no permanent waterhole drawing hundreds of animals into one place. Instead, you follow dry riverbeds through enormous valleys, scanning the landscape for the shape of a giraffe between the trees or the tracks of an elephant disappearing into the sand. And then, suddenly, you find them. A herd of desert-adapted elephants moving quietly through the Hoanib. A giraffe feeding beneath an ancient tree. Rhino tracks crossing the riverbed.
For us, that is what makes Kaokoland special. The wildlife is only part of the story. It is the relationship between the animals, the mountains, the river and the harsh landscape that makes every sighting feel earned.
Questions about this safari
What wildlife can I expect to see?
The Hoanib Valley is particularly known for desert-adapted elephant and giraffe, with opportunities to encounter free-ranging black rhino and, more rarely, desert-adapted lion. Oryx, springbok, kudu, zebra, klipspringer and a variety of desert bird species are also found in the area.
Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?
Kaokoland is a genuine wilderness rather than a concentrated game-viewing destination. Animals are dispersed across an enormous landscape, and sightings depend on season, water, weather and the movements of the wildlife.
What makes the wildlife here different?
The animals of the Hoanib have adapted to an exceptionally arid environment. Desert-adapted elephants and giraffe, in particular, have developed ways of finding food and water across a landscape where both can be scarce. That makes observing them here a very different experience from traditional safari destinations.
Can I track rhino on foot?
Yes. For stays of three nights or more, black rhino tracking on foot can form part of the experience, subject to conditions and the movements of the animals.
What activities are available?
Activities include game drives, guided nature walks, black rhino tracking, giraffe conservation experiences and cultural experiences.
When is the best time to visit Kaokoland?
Kaokoland can be visited year-round, but the character of the landscape changes considerably. December to March brings the green season and occasional rain, while the dry months gradually become warmer. By October, the land is at its driest and desert-adapted elephants may gather around remaining water sources.
Is Kaokoland suitable for families?
Yes. Hoanib Valley Camp welcomes children of all ages.
Can I combine Kaokoland with the Skeleton Coast?
Absolutely. The two destinations complement one another particularly well. Kaokoland takes you into the mountains and dry river valleys in search of desert-adapted wildlife, while the Skeleton Coast brings the journey towards the Atlantic, with coastal fog, dunes, shipwrecks and Cape fur seal colonies.
Can I combine Kaokoland with other parts of Namibia?
Yes. Kaokoland works particularly well as part of a longer northern Namibia journey, including the Skeleton Coast and other desert landscapes. We can build the route around the time you have available and the type of wildlife and landscapes you want to experience.
