Why You'll Love This Safari
The Endless Dunes

The dunes around Sossusvlei rise hundreds of metres above the surrounding desert, their shapes constantly changing with wind and light. Climbing one at sunrise reveals just how vast the Namib really is, with waves of sand stretching towards distant mountains.
Sossusvlei & Deadvlei

The journey into Sossusvlei and Deadvlei brings together some of the Namib’s most striking landscapes. White clay pans sit beneath enormous orange dunes, while the skeletal remains of ancient camelthorn trees stand against the sand.
A Desert Alive With Wildlife

The Namib may look empty, but life is everywhere once you know where to look. Oryx and springbok move across the plains, Hartmann’s mountain zebra inhabit the rocky areas, while smaller desert-adapted species emerge among the dunes and gravel plains.
The Desert After Dark

With little artificial light for miles, Sossusvlei offers extraordinary night skies. At &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, an observatory and resident astronomer add another dimension to the experience, while the wider Namib is naturally suited to long evenings beneath the stars.
See the Namib From Above

The scale of Sossusvlei is difficult to understand from the ground. Scenic flights, helicopter flights and hot-air ballooning reveal the patterns of the dunes, mountains and desert plains from a completely different perspective.
Light Across the Landscape

Sossusvlei is constantly changing. At sunrise the dunes appear sharply sculpted, by midday the landscape becomes stark and immense, and towards sunset the sand deepens in colour as shadows stretch across the valleys. For photographers, there is something different to find every time the light moves.
Lodges In Our Portfolio
The Endless Sands of Sossusvlei is built around two carefully selected lodges, each offering a different way to experience the Namib. &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is a secluded luxury retreat within its own private reserve, while Sossusvlei Lodge sits directly beside the entrance to Namib-Naukluft National Park, making access to Sossusvlei and the surrounding attractions particularly convenient.

&Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
Set deep within a vast private desert reserve, &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge feels less like a place to stay and more like a retreat into the Namib itself. Ten glass-and-stone suites disappear into the mountainside, opening towards immense desert views, while private plunge pools, skylights and an extraordinary observatory make the landscape part of the experience from day into night. Days can be spent exploring Sossusvlei and the surrounding dunes, walking across the reserve or simply watching the light move across the desert in complete solitude.

The All Out Safaris Perspective
Sossusvlei is a place that makes you realise just how much can exist in a landscape that appears completely empty.
At first, you notice the dunes. Their size, their colour and the way the shadows move across them as the sun rises. Then you start noticing everything else. Tracks crossing the sand. Oryx moving between the dunes. Tiny plants surviving where there seems to be no water. The ancient trees of Deadvlei standing silently beneath the mountains of sand.
For us, that is the beauty of Sossusvlei. It is not simply about seeing the dunes. It is about slowing down enough to notice the life, light and immense sense of space within them.
Questions about this safari
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Oryx and springbok are among the most commonly encountered larger mammals, with Hartmann’s mountain zebra, ostrich, jackal, bat-eared fox and other desert-adapted species also found across the region. Smaller mammals, reptiles and a wide variety of birds add to the desert ecosystem.
Is Sossusvlei a traditional safari destination?
Not in the same way as Etosha or the Greater Kruger. The focus here is the desert landscape, with wildlife forming part of a much broader experience of dunes, geology, ancient plants, photography and exploration.
What is the difference between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei?
Sossusvlei is the larger salt-and-clay pan surrounded by dunes, while Deadvlei is a nearby white clay pan famous for its ancient, blackened camelthorn trees. Both can be visited as part of the same excursion.
When is the best time to visit Sossusvlei?
Sossusvlei can be visited throughout the year. The cooler, drier months generally offer comfortable conditions for early-morning dune excursions, while summer can bring occasional rainfall and dramatic skies. The desert remains beautiful in every season, but the experience changes with temperature, light and weather.
Can I see the desert from the air?
Yes. Depending on your lodge, you can experience scenic flights, helicopter flights or hot-air ballooning over the dunes and surrounding desert. &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge also offers dedicated scenic flights over the Namib.
Which lodge should I choose?
That depends on your travel style, budget and priorities. &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is best suited to travellers looking for seclusion, exceptional design, expansive private-reserve landscapes and a more exclusive desert experience. Sossusvlei Lodge is better suited to travellers who want a relaxed, family-friendly base immediately beside the park entrance, with easy access to Sossusvlei and a wider range of activities. If you're unsure which is right for you, we'll recommend the option that best matches your travel style and preferences.
Is Sossusvlei suitable for families?
Yes. Sossusvlei Lodge is particularly well suited to families, while &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge also offers a dedicated family Star Dune Suite.
Can I combine Sossusvlei with the Skeleton Coast?
Yes. Sossusvlei and the Skeleton Coast create a natural contrast between the inland dunes of the Namib and the fog-shrouded Atlantic coastline. They can be combined with Kaokoland or other northern Namibian destinations to create a longer desert-focused journey.
