Why You'll Love This Safari
A Different Side of Botswana
.jpg)
Mashatu feels distinctly different from the waterways of the Okavango and the riverfront wilderness of Chobe. Here, the landscape opens out into dry plains, rocky outcrops, ancient trees and wide horizons.
Space to Roam
.jpg)
The scale of the landscape gives wildlife room to move and creates a wonderfully open feeling on safari. Long stretches of wilderness unfold around you, often with very little else on the horizon.
A Photographer’s Wilderness
.jpg)
Mashatu offers the kind of landscapes that give wildlife photography a strong sense of place. Ancient baobabs, open plains, rocky terrain and changing light create opportunities that extend well beyond traditional close-up wildlife portraits.
Wildlife Beyond the Big Five

While elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo are among the area's highlights, Mashatu offers much more. Cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and a variety of antelope add to the diversity of the experience.
Ancient Landscapes
.jpg)
There is a sense of age to Mashatu. Giant baobabs, rocky outcrops and dry riverbeds give the landscape a character that feels both rugged and timeless.
The Quiet Wild
.jpg)
Mashatu isn't about constantly chasing the next sighting. It's about long stretches of wilderness, unhurried game drives and the feeling of having space to yourself. A quieter, more intimate side of Botswana.

Sample Itinerary
Recommended Stay: 4 Nights | 5 Days
We believe a minimum of four nights is the ideal way to experience Mashatu. It gives you time to explore its open plains, rocky landscapes and ancient baobabs, while allowing enough time for unhurried game drives and the chance to experience the area's remarkable diversity of wildlife.
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Limpopo Valley Airfield. From there, you'll be transferred into Mashatu and to your chosen lodge.
After checking into your room and settling in, enjoy lunch at the lodge before setting off on your first afternoon game drive.
As the golden light settles across the landscape, pause for sundowners in the bush before returning to the lodge for an evening of dining.
Inclusions: Airport transfer, lunch, afternoon game drive, sundowners, dinner.
Days 2-4
Each day begins before sunrise as you head into Mashatu in search of elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and the many other species that move across its open landscapes, with a stop for freshly brewed coffee and light refreshments in the bush.
Following your morning safari, enjoy breakfast before spending time at leisure, taking in the lodge and its surroundings.
Lunch is served at the lodge before another afternoon game drive, following the wildlife and conditions of the day rather than a fixed route.
As the afternoon light begins to fade, pause for sundowners in the wilderness before returning for an evening of dining.
Inclusions: Morning drive with coffee and snacks, breakfast, lunch, afternoon game drive, sundowners, dinner.
Day 5: Departure
Set out on one final morning game drive, pausing for coffee and refreshments in the bush before enjoying breakfast and checking out.
You'll then transfer to Limpopo Valley Airfield for your onward journey, bringing your Mashatu safari to a close.
Inclusions: Morning drive with coffee and snacks, breakfast and/or lunch, airport transfer.

The All Out Safaris Perspective
Mashatu has a different rhythm from the better-known safari destinations of northern Botswana.
The landscape is drier, more open and often surprisingly quiet. You can spend a morning moving beneath enormous baobabs, cross a dry riverbed and suddenly find yourself watching elephants or a predator moving across the plains.
What we love about Mashatu is the space. There is room to slow down, room to explore and room to notice the smaller details that can easily disappear when a safari becomes about ticking off sightings. It feels like a place where the wilderness is allowed to simply be.
Questions about this safari
Is this safari suitable for first-time visitors to Botswana?
Yes. Mashatu offers an excellent classic safari experience, with diverse wildlife, exceptional landscapes and a quieter feel than some of Botswana's better-known destinations. It is particularly rewarding as part of a wider Botswana journey.
Which Mashatu lodge should I choose?
That depends on your travel style, budget and priorities. Euphorbia Mashatu is the more private and intimate option, making it particularly suited to couples and special occasions. Mashatu Lodge is a comfortable all-round choice and especially well suited to families. Tuli Safari Lodge offers a more intimate, traditional safari atmosphere and works beautifully for couples and friends. If you're unsure which is right for you, we'll recommend the option that best matches your travel style and preferences.
When is the best time to visit Mashatu?
The drier months are generally best for traditional wildlife viewing, as vegetation thins and animals become easier to find around water. The green season brings dramatic skies, fresh vegetation, migratory birds and young animals.
What makes Mashatu different from Chobe or the Okavango Delta?
Mashatu has a distinctly different landscape, characterised by open plains, rocky outcrops, ancient baobabs and the Limpopo River. Where Chobe is defined by its river and elephant concentrations and the Delta by its waterways, Mashatu feels more open, rugged and expansive.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Mashatu is known for its diversity, with opportunities to see elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, bat-eared foxes and numerous antelope species. Its varied landscapes also make for excellent birding and photography.
