Why You'll Love This Safari
The Birth of the Migration

Each year, the southern Serengeti becomes the setting for one of the most extraordinary chapters of the Great Migration, as vast herds of wildebeest gather on the nutrient-rich plains and a new generation is born. It is a season of constant movement, with newborn calves, protective mothers and predators all shaping the drama of the landscape.
A Landscape Built for Predators

Ndutu is renowned for its exceptional predator viewing, with lion, cheetah, leopard and spotted hyena moving between the open plains and surrounding woodland. The combination of clear sightlines and varied habitat makes it possible to watch hunting, territorial behaviour and the constant relationship between predators and prey unfold naturally.
Wildlife Around the Lakes

The lakes and seasonal wetlands give Ndutu a character of their own, drawing wildlife and birdlife into an otherwise open landscape. Lake Ndutu changes with the seasons, sometimes holding water and sometimes retreating to a shimmering expanse of exposed lakebed, adding another layer to the scenery and wildlife experience.
Wildlife in the Open

The short-grass plains create expansive views across the landscape, making it possible to follow animals as they move through the grasslands rather than simply encountering them in passing. Wildebeest, zebra, elephant, buffalo and giraffe share these open spaces with the predators that follow them.
The Dry Season Wildlife

Ndutu remains compelling long after the Migration has moved on. As the vegetation becomes more sparse during the dry months, resident predators become easier to observe and the changing landscape creates a different style of safari, with wildlife increasingly concentrated around the remaining water and food sources.
A Different Side of the Serengeti

Ndutu offers a more intimate and varied experience of the Serengeti ecosystem, with open plains, woodland, lakes and wildlife all coming together in one landscape. It is a place to spend time following predators, watching herds move across the plains and simply allowing the character of the southern Serengeti to reveal itself.
Lodges In Our Portfolio
The New Life of Ndutu is built around two carefully selected lodges, both positioned around Lake Ndutu and the southern Serengeti plains. Each gives you a comfortable base from which to follow the calving season, explore the surrounding woodland and lakes and spend long days focused on the wildlife.

Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge
Set among the open plains of Ndutu, Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge offers a more contemporary take on the classic southern Serengeti safari. Its spacious luxury tents look towards the surrounding wilderness, with private bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers and generous decks creating a comfortable base between game drives. The location places guests close to one of Tanzania's most important wildlife areas, particularly during the Great Migration when the plains become alive with wildebeest, predators and newborn animals.

The All Out Safaris Perspective
Ndutu has a way of making the Serengeti feel closer. The plains are open, the wildlife is often right in front of you and there is always something happening between the herds and the predators that follow them.
Of course, seeing the Migration arrive and witnessing new life on the plains is a remarkable part of the experience. But Ndutu is not a destination we would reserve for one season. Its resident predators, changing landscapes and wildlife viewing make it compelling long after the herds have moved on.
For us, Ndutu is about slowing down and letting the landscape dictate the day. Sometimes that means following a hunt across the plains. Sometimes it means sitting quietly beside a lake. You never quite know what the next drive will bring.
Questions about this safari
What is the Great Migration calving season?
The calving season is the period when large numbers of wildebeest gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu to give birth. It generally takes place from around December through March, although the exact timing changes with the rains.
When is the best time to visit Ndutu?
The main calving season runs from approximately December to March, with January and February generally offering the greatest concentration of newborn calves and predator activity. The exact timing varies from year to year according to rainfall and the movement of the herds.
What wildlife can I expect to see in Ndutu?
Wildebeest are the main attraction during the calving season, accompanied by large numbers of zebra. Lion, cheetah, leopard and spotted hyena are among the predators drawn to the area, while elephant, giraffe, buffalo and numerous other species can also be encountered.
Will I see wildebeest giving birth?
There is a very good opportunity to witness births during the calving season, but individual births cannot be predicted or guaranteed. The sheer number of wildebeest gathering in Ndutu means that new calves and mothers are a constant part of the landscape during this period.
Is Ndutu only worth visiting during the calving season?
The calving season is what makes Ndutu particularly famous, but the area remains part of the wider Serengeti ecosystem outside the peak calving months. For travellers specifically seeking newborn wildebeest and the intense predator activity associated with calving, however, the timing of the journey is central to the experience.
Which lodge should I choose?
Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge is best suited to travellers wanting a more contemporary tented experience around Lake Ndutu, particularly couples, families and photographers focused on the calving season. Ndutu Safari Lodge is better suited to travellers who value classic safari character, history and a more traditional lodge atmosphere, with wildlife and guiding at the centre of the experience.
Is Ndutu suitable for families?
Yes. Both lodges can work for families, although the overall experience is focused heavily on wildlife and long days in the bush. We will recommend the most suitable property based on your children's ages and the type of safari you want.
Is Ndutu part of the Serengeti?
Ndutu sits within the southern Serengeti ecosystem and extends into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The wildlife moves freely across this wider ecosystem, which is why the Migration does not follow the administrative boundaries on a map.
Can I combine Ndutu with the Serengeti?
Yes. Ndutu works particularly well as part of a wider Serengeti journey. We can combine the southern calving grounds with another part of the Serengeti if you want to experience more than one landscape or stage of the Migration.
Can I combine Ndutu with Ngorongoro?
Yes. Ndutu and Ngorongoro make a natural combination within a northern Tanzania safari, particularly because the Ndutu area lies within the southern part of the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Can I combine Ndutu with Lake Manyara?
Yes. Lake Manyara can be incorporated before or after Ndutu to add a completely different landscape of groundwater forest, wetlands, open woodland and the alkaline lake to your journey.
